Sweet Chestnut
Famous for their tasty nuts, but underappreciated as a sustainable alternative to oak for durable hardwood timber.
Like oak, sweet chestnut (not to be confused with horse chestnut) is strong, durable and contains high levels of tannins - making it resistant to rot and a great choice for outdoor fencing, posts and furniture.
But it's also superb for joinery and cabinet making - easy to work with and attractive.
